5 Bean Coffee is an independent-owned coffee shop in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Its owners hired Heitmeyer Building and Design to redesign their tight interior space to improve efficiency for both employees and customers. Here is a condensed interview with Tracy, 5 Bean’s owner.
A: We needed to get more functionality out of the small indoor space we had. In addition to creating specialty coffee, teas, and other drinks, we sell a lot of branded merchandise – coffee, coffee mugs and thermoses, baked goods and healthy snacks, and products to make drinks at home. We wanted to display these items attractively and not look cluttered.
Because of the nature of our business, we have to store products onsite including ingredients, of course, and containers for drinks and edible products. We needed enough counter space to hold ingredients used most often, like pump and squirt bottles that hold flavors used in coffee drinks, and under-the-counter space for additional storage.
We wanted space to be used as efficiently as possible so that our employees can work without having to constantly look around for ingredients or squeeze past one another to reach for tools. A shop like ours needs to look immaculately clean and organized.
A: All their renovations helped our efficiency. Our employees have what they need within easy reach. They have the space they need to prep for our busiest times so customers don’t have to wait around. This is my profit. It gives me more money to spend on other things.

A: I think the most impactful part of any renovation is the functionality that gives us the most efficient way to do things – how can we get product made more quickly and do it more efficiently. How can I not have my staff bumping into each other in such a small space?
A: They take your business needs very seriously. They understand the concerns of businesspeople and takes them seriously. They’re willing to help in any way to speed up the process or to make things easier. They understood that if I’m shut down for half a day, I’m losing money.

A: I think anyone who’s going to renovate your space should understand the demands of the business. They should understand what your needs are, where you are, where you need to be, and what it’s going to take to get there.
A: There’s lots of options out there. I think the smartest thing to do is to find a person who’s in it for the long haul with you and you make sure you’ve got quality products being installed by quality people.
